Giving Thanks

Gratitude shown to benefit health of individuals and families

Thanksgiving offers many delights, but the pace of travel and celebrations can add stress to family life.  Taking a "gratitude break" not just on one day - but every day - holds measurable benefits, as measured in a study at UC Davis.  Investigators randomly assigned a group of volunteers to focus on things for which they were grateful; other groups were told to focus on irritating things or just remember events.  The gratitude group reported greater optimism, fewer physical symptoms and spent almost 90 minutes more per week exercising than the people who focused on their hassles.  Even more importantly, these benefits extended to family members and co-workers.

Important information you want to know

Few teens struggling with suicidal thoughts seek help:  Suicide is the third most common cause of death among young people, yet few obtain the mental health services they need. The misconception that suicidal thoughts are a normal part of growing up is still prevalent. Only about 1 in 10 teens had actually seen a mental health professional in one study. Lack of sleep can lead to more risky behaviors in teens: A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found teens that slept less than an average of 8 hours a day were more likely to engage in risky behaviors, including substance use and sexual activity, as well as suffer more from depression. Parents can help teens manage stress and their schedules: Teens these days are often exhausted and over committed. Click here to learn how to help your child manage stress.
